One detail that trips people up: because the Work Program is built into Berea's educational model, international students can take part without needing a separate work permit. That is not something you find at most American colleges.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible, you need to:

• Be applying as an international student for undergraduate admission
• Have completed, or be close to completing, your secondary education
• Show strong academic potential
• Show genuine financial need
• Meet the English language or standardized test requirements
• Submit a test score from Duolingo, IELTS, TOEFL iBT, TOEFL PBT, SAT, or ACT, taken within the last two years

Even if you already speak fluent English or studied entirely in English, you still need to submit one of these test scores. Berea does not make exceptions here, so plan for it early rather than assuming you can skip it.

Documents You Will Need

Berea's application process is thorough, so give yourself enough time to gather everything properly.

1. Personal Essay (2 to 5 pages) covering your educational and life experiences, your plans after graduation, whether you intend to return home and why, and how you have contributed to your community.
2. Official Secondary School Records: O-Level, A-Level, national exam results, or equivalent. If they are not in English, they need a certified translation.
3. Teacher Recommendation Form, ideally submitted through Berea's own online form.
4. Financial Resource Recommendation Form, completed in English by someone who is not a close relative, such as a school administrator, employer, or religious leader, who can speak to your financial situation.
5. Official Test Score from IELTS, Duolingo, TOEFL, SAT, or ACT, no older than two years.
6. International Financial Questionnaire, completed through Berea's own application portal. Note that Berea does not accept the CSS Profile or ISFAA in place of this form, and you will not be asked to submit bank statements.

How to Apply, Step by Step

• Step 1: Take an approved English or standardized test (Duolingo, IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, or ACT) and hit the required score.
• Step 2: Gather your official secondary school records.
• Step 3: Complete the Berea College Application for Admission for International Students. There is no application fee, so cost should never be the reason you do not apply.
• Step 4: Arrange your teacher recommendation and Financial Resource Recommendation Form.
• Step 5: Fill out the International Financial Questionnaire through Berea's application portal.
• Step 6: Double check everything and submit before the deadline. Incomplete applications are not considered, so it is worth reviewing your file a few days early rather than rushing on the last day.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Each year, Berea enrolls around 120 international students from more than 70 countries, so the community is genuinely global. If you are admitted, you will typically be asked for a $2,200 enrollment deposit to confirm your place, but if that amount is out of reach, Berea says it will look at your situation individually and may adjust it or offer more aid. That deposit also goes toward your expenses over your four years there, so it is not money lost.

If you apply and are not admitted, you are allowed to apply again in a future year. Only one application per academic year is allowed, so use the time in between to strengthen your academics, your test score, or your essay.
