University of Rwanda Opens Undergraduate Admissions for 2026-2027 Academic Year: Here's Everything You Need to Know

If you've been waiting for this moment, it's finally here. The University of Rwanda (UR) has officially opened its online application system for undergraduate admissions into the 2026-2027 academic year. This call covers all seven UR colleges plus the Rwanda Institute for Computing (RIC), so whether you're eyeing engineering, business, health sciences, or computing, this announcement is for you.

The application window is short, so don't sit on this one.

Key Dates

The portal opened on 22nd September 2026 and closed on 5th October 2026. That's less than two weeks, so if you're planning to apply, start now rather than later.

Who Can Apply

This call is open to prospective applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements for their chosen program. A few things worth knowing upfront:

• Minimum entry requirements are specific to each program and are published on the official UR website alongside the call for applications.
• UR programs are competitive, with limited spots. Admission is based on the university's absorption capacity and how well you performed academically, either through your Advanced Level National Examination results or an Equivalence Certificate.

Before You Start: What You Need

Get these three things ready before touching the application portal:

1. A personal email address you check regularly
2. Your valid National ID
3. Your personal mobile number

How to Apply: Step by Step

Step 1: Generate Your UR Reference Number

• Go to the official UR Online Application Portal: applications.ur.ac.rw
• If you completed Senior Six in Rwanda, enter your Senior Six Index Number. The system will automatically pull your National Examination results from NESA. Review the information, fill in whatever's missing, and submit. Once that's done, your UR Reference Number and PIN will land in your email.
• If you're an international applicant, or a Rwandan applicant who studied under a foreign education system and holds an official Equivalence Certificate, you'll fill out the online application form directly. Same result: your UR Reference Number and PIN get sent to your email once you submit.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

• For Senior Six graduates from Rwanda, your results from NESA will show up automatically in the system.
• Based on your Senior Six combination, the system will display all programs you're eligible for. You can select up to three (3) programs, in order of preference.
• Applications can only be submitted after your application fee has been paid and reflected in the system.
• Changed your mind? You can still switch your selected programs anytime before the application deadline.
• International applicants and those with Equivalence Certificates need to upload supporting documents: Equivalence Certificate, Senior Six Certificate, and a copy of your Passport or National ID (for Rwandans).
• Once your application goes through successfully, you'll get a confirmation notification by email, along with a confirmation letter.

Step 3: Pay the Application Fee

• Rwandan and EAC citizens pay Frw 5,000
• International applicants pay Frw 6,000
• This fee is non-refundable, so double-check your program choices before paying.

Payment goes through the Urubuto System, using your UR Reference Number as the Payer Code. You have a few payment options:

• Bank of Kigali (BK) counter
• MTN Mobile Payment: dial *775*5# and follow the prompts
• BK App via internet banking
• Online payment through urubutopay.rw/pay-now?origin=internal, using merchant code TH77306981

One important note from UR: make sure your UR Reference Number is entered correctly when paying. This is what links your payment to your application, and a mismatch can delay processing.

A Word of Caution

Because places are limited and competition is real, take your time filling out each step correctly. A small error, like a wrong reference number or a missed document upload, can cost you time you don't have during a two-week window.
